HISTORY Welcome to Our Castle

Castle of Imperiale
The origins Longobard Age (IX century)

The castle, seated at 888 metres above sea level, is composed by a complex architectural structure that is the result of the continuous past reworks. It belongs to the historical and cultural overview of the Alta Irpinia area, that is characterized by Early Middle Age fortified settlements that still today dominate the bordering areas. Thanks to the realization of the Igelda project the castle has been enriched with a new section that focuses on Memory, Rurality, Emigration and on Rural Culture. These themes are presented as an itinerary through images and texts concerning life conditions of Irpinia rural population during the early 20th century. The aim of the museum is to preserve rural memories and to share this knowledge to all the students, including, obviously, boys and girls with disabilities, who, thanks to of the Giada Foundation, had already been involved in the realization of little handmade objects .

  • Norman Age (XI-XII century)

The fortress was transformed in a real medieval castle: the original fortifications were expanded and reinforced and the square tower was built.

  • Until XV century

the old dwelling had a control aim.

  • Possession of Caracciolo (XV-XVI century)

During the age of Caracciolo, the Castle was subject to changes that contributed to changing its medieval appearance and it was transformed into a sumptuous aristocratic residence.

  • Age of Imperiale family (XVIII CENTURY)

Around the castle there was a trapezoidal courtyard that was constituted by three full- centre marble arches that permitted the upstairs access where there was a loggia with arches that fell down after the earthquake of 1980.

  • Since 1862

The castle became both a prison and a courthouse.

  • Until the 1980 earthquake

Around the castle there was a trapezoidal courtyard that was constituted by three full- centre marble arches that permitted the upstairs access where there was a loggia with arches that fell down after the earthquake of 1980.

  • After the earthquake of 1980

With the earthquake falling the southern part of the Castle and subsequently the Castle was bought by the local municipality, in order to preserve its history and function.

With the deliberation of the Regional Council n. 2280 of 12.29.2007 published on the BURC n.5 of 4th February 2008 the Museum of Castle Area has acquired the status of regional interest.
